EVALUATION STUDY OF DEVELOPMENT AND BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN USING DDST IN A RURAL AREA OF KOREA

Abstract
The Denver Developmental Screening__ Test_ (DDST) was used to check the development and behavior of children belonging to the age group 0-1 year on June 1, 1974. The DDST was given to 499 children (269 boys and 230 girls) during the one-year study period from June 1, 1974 to May 31, 1975 at these Myons of Chunseong Gun, Kang Won Province.
The interpretation of the DDST results was modified from the original scoring rule
in the DDST manual in a way most applicable to the Korean situation as follows;
"Abnormal" if Two delays (failures) are found in any one of the sectors and if in the same sector the age line does not go through an item that is passed.
~F "Questionable" if there is one delay (failure) in any one sector and if in the same sector the age line does not go through an item which is passed.
~E "Normal" if the performance is not Questionable or Abnormal.
¢¥Summary of the Findings;
1. The results show that 97 children (19.7%) were rated as "Questionable" and 39 children (7.8%) were "Abnormal" out of total 499 children, and no difference between the sexes was observed. 2. Analysis of DDST results by age of children show significant difference between;
the variables (P (x2) <0.01). ¢¥ -
3. Under the "Questionable¢¥ category with a total of 117 occasions delayed development
in Gross-motor was the most problematic sector with 54 (46.1%) items and the
next was the Language, 27 items (23.1%).
4. Under the "Abnormal" category with a total of 100 occasions, delayed development in Gross-motor was also the most problematic sector with 52 items (52.0%), the next cause was Fine motor-Adaptive with 21 items (21.0%) and Language with 15 items (15.0%)
5. Analysis of DDST results by occupation of father and birth order of the children shows no significant difference between the variables (P) 0.05).
